September 11, 2017 | Jeffrey Bloom
About the author: Jeffrey Bloom is a writer on issues of culture and society.

Attending a twelve-step meeting with a family member, Jeffrey Bloom came to the disquieting realization that some of the recovering addicts in attendance seemed more in touch with their own spiritual development than was he, an observant Jew. This led him to undertake an extended exploration of the intertwined themes of Judaism, religion, and America’s addiction crisis, and to publication of the resultant essay in Mosaic. Herewith, his discussion of his essay with Jonathan Silver. (Audio, 31 minutes.)
